Note from the Editor: Introducing City South Magazine

Welcome to the inaugural issue of City South Magazine. We’re building on the success and popularity of St. Louis Park Magazine and expanding our reach to include Minneapolis neighborhoods south of the lakes and west of I-35W. If you’ve received this magazine, you’re a part of our storytelling mission. Businesses, hobbyists, bikers, educators, students, community volunteers: We want your stories—send them to me, at editor@citysouthmagazine.com, along with your story ideas, and your best-ever photos, too. See our photo contest guidelines here.

August is our education issue, and I couldn’t imagine a better theme for a kick-off. In these pages, you’ll find profiles of some of our communities’ finest students. You’ll also find that just about every article has some connection to learning. Learning in Style School in Whittier is a place our most recently arrived neighbors can come to learn English. St. Louis Park Community Education provides a roster of free classes for adults. Keren Gudeman of Improv Parenting teaches kids and parents how to be goofy together. We even have a story about a woman who teaches our pets. Dear to my heart is a story by talented young writer Erik Tormoen about several amazing independent book stores we are lucky to have in our community. As one of my favorite kindergarten teachers, in whose class I volunteer every week, writes in her email signoff: Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.

We’re glad you’re with us, new readers, and thanks for your loyalty, readers already here for the ride. I’m learning from each of you, every day.
