Parktacular 2014

“Splash into Summer” with four days of fun at St. Louis Park’s Parktacular celebration. The activities include family fishing, water slides, live music and a food garden. This marks the first year that the Rock the Block party on Friday night will have free admission. The Grand Day Parade is the main event on Saturday and will be followed by “Kidtacular” activities that include a petting zoo and pony rides. Saturday will also feature a free concert with Beatles tribute band Rubber Soul. Free kayak and canoe rides will be available, as well as other fun activities. Most events are free.

State Arbor Month Celebration and Minnesota Tree Climbing Championships

This year the DNR is celebrating Arbor Day and Arbor Month by encouraging families to play in natural settings such as your backyard, a nearby woodlot, or forested area.

The 2014 State Arbor Month Celebration will be at Oak Hill Park in St. Louis Park. The event will give families a chance to play with nature, while watching some of the best tree climbers in the state compete at the Minnesota Tree Climbing Championship.

Jumpstart Your Job Search

Courtesy of the library’s most popular workshop, adults over 40 are invited to learn tips and tricks when starting a job search. Topics include how to crack the dilemma of wage and age, communicating across generations and using experience as a positive. Memorial Day Service

Celebrate those who have fought and died for the United States. Gather with fellow St. Louis Park residents for a memorial and tribute. Free. 11 a.m., flag raising at noon. Veterans’ Memorial Amphitheater; 952.924.2540; stlouispark.org

Mainstreet Days

More than 100 art and craft vendors, food vendors and kids’ activity stands are on to celebrate Hopkins’ Mainstreet Days. The Hopkins Area Jaycees sponsor a daylong event that includes train rides, balloon animals, food and much more. Poet Tracy K. Smith

The Hopkins Center for the Arts partners with Friends of the Hennepin County Library to present the final author in their 2013-14 Pen Pals series. Smith’s most recent collection of poetry, Life on Mars, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2012 and was a New York Times Notable Book of 2011. Balcony $40, main floor $50.
