Looking for obstacles in your fitness training? In a novel “obstacle race course meets group fitness studio crossover,” Life Time St. Louis Park is now offering an intense and unique training program called Spartan Strong. According to Life Time’s Riley McLaughlin, Spartan Strong “will bring the grit of the obstacle course mentality into the studio for exercises that will challenge the body and mind.”
Rob Glick, senior programming director at Life Time, worked directly with Spartan Race representatives to re-create the gritty obstacle course experience in a group fitness space. The areas of focus of the in-studio program, says Glick, are readiness, stamina, accountability, tenacity/grit and mental toughness.
Classes are high intensity, fast-paced, involve physical and mental challenges and teamwork. The workout has both aerobic and strength components. Kids as young as 12 are welcome, making Spartan Strong an option for families with older children. “It’s a great way to build self-esteem and self-worth for all people, especially teens,” says McLaughlin.
