Picture City South Winner Captures 'Magical Morning' at Lakewood Cemetery

A monument at Lakewood Cemetery covered in snow.
"Winter Wonderland at Lakewood Cemetery" won two awards in our annual Picture City South photo contest.

This photo by Jeff Liss, Winter Wonderland at Lakewood Cemetery, won both our Readers’ Choice award and first place in the “City Landmarks” category of our 2019 Picture City South photo contest.

Liss says, “A serious photographer never misses an opportunity, especially when it presents itself in nature. On a frosty Sunday morning last March, I awoke to an amazing snowfall that occurred the night before. What I saw from my window was like a scene from a fairytale. A fluffy white blanket of fresh snow covered the ground, the houses and the trees in Minneapolis. Instead of having that second cup of coffee, I grabbed my camera bag, jumped into my car and headed out to capture the scene in photos. I had taken a number of shots around the lakes that morning when I saw what nature had done to Lakewood Cemetery. I felt like I was in a Tchaikovsky ballet with gorgeous snow dancing off the trees and monuments. I took this photo and a few more that magical morning. An opportunity not missed is a photo that lasts forever.”
